Junior Professor Dr. Merle Tränkner

From June 2017 until May 2021, Dr. Merle Tränkner was junior professor for “Applied Plant Nutrition“ at IAPN and at the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Göttingen. In addition to research and teaching, her professorship included heading the junior research group at IAPN. At the institute, she was also one of the primary contributors to the exchange of knowledge, such as interdisciplinary events.

Research on magnesium: photo protection and water-use efficiency

In her research, Merle Tränkner picked up on questions that had come up during her PhD research project. “For my dissertation, I had primarily concentrated on the plant nutrient magnesium (Mg), which actually has many functions in photosynthesis. Now, two resulting research questions are subjected to in-depth research”, Merle Tränkner explained. “In case of Mg deficiency, plant cells are no longer able to sufficiently transform the light energy they have absorbed and convert it into sugar by photosynthesis. This results in excessive energy, which promotes the formation of cell-damaging reactive oxygen species. Plants have developed protective mechanisms against the detrimental effects of too much intensive light. To study these mechanisms is one focus of my current research.”

The second focal point is water-use efficiency. “During my PhD studies I was able to show that Mg modifies water-use efficiency”, said Merle Tränkner. “Together with IAPN scientists I am now trying to find out how that happens.”

Teaching at IAPN: theory and practice in interaction

Topical research results and methods directly informed the courses held by Junior Professor Merle Tränkner. Both her Bachelor course as well as her Master module were interactive, connecting theory with practice. In the junior professor’s opinion, lectures should not only aim at imparting lots of facts: “They should also aim at creating an understanding in students, enabling them to abstract. This type of understanding will allow them to benefit long-term. All of my course participants are eager to learn, and they’re highly motivated. And this in turn strongly motivates me”, said Merle Tränkner.

Dr. Merle Tränkner was appointed junior professor in June 2017. Before, she carried out her PhD project at IAPN from October 2012 until December 2016. During this time, she specifically studied the impact of Mg, nitrogen and potassium on the water-use efficiency of wheat, barley and tobacco. Additionally, she worked with a multi-sensing approach. It allowed evaluating the effect of drought stress and nutrient deficiency on crops by means of thermography, chlorophyll-fluorescence, gas exchange measurements as well as 13C stable isotope analyses.

In 2010, Merle Tränkner had finished her Bachelor’s in agricultural sciences at the University of Göttingen, and subsequently went on to complete her Master’s in the degree program “Sustainable International Agriculture“.
