- Distinguished: Master Thesis by Thorsten Scheile

For his outstanding master thesis, Thorsten Scheile was awarded the 2014 Sponsorship Grant of the German Agricultural Industry, the Förderpreis der Agrarwirtschaft. The thesis was written at the IAPN, and was supervised by Junior Professor Dr. Mehmet Senbayram and by Prof. Dr. Klaus Dittert. This prize is awarded by the agricultural journal az (agrarzeitung) and honors particularly dedicated and innovative young talents in the agricultural sector. In 2014, the journal distinguished a total of four award winners.

For his master thesis, Thorsten Scheile investigated whether and to which degree ammonia emissions from cattle slurry can be reduced by adding potassium and magnesium salts to liquid animal manure. The results are promising: the addition of an ideal combination of mineral salts has the potential to reduce emissions from organic fertilization upon application to agricultural fields. At the same time it provides essential minerals to the soil. These results clearly demonstrated approaches to a more climate friendly agriculture, a fact that convinced the eighteen-strong jury of agricultural experts.
